What do you, in all sincerity, expect of a company that is one-part of Lemon Jelly – the magnetic musical duo who rocked the London music scene? Versatility. Jagged edges. Out of the box thinking. Smashing’ graphics! So we popped on over to Airside’s design company and were bowled over by their amazing portfolio. Awesome! If you want creative, that’s what we call creative! Airside covers all forms of advertising, from illustrations to animation, from t-shirts to websites, from branding to full-on commercials. Founded in 1998 by Lemon Jelly’s Fred Deakin, Alex Maclean and Nat Hunter, Airside's unique approach has won many awards including recognition from Design Week, D&AD and Bafta.
With their self-titled book “Airside by Airside”, the creative studio released their ‘autobiography’, an unprecedented amount of vector art and graphics that they’ve done for large companies like Coca-Cola, Mastercard, Panasonic, Sony, the Barbican and… get this… the Pet Shop Boys and even the Beatles too! The London-based design studio has been around from as far back a decade ago so, Nat Hunter, Fred Deakin and Alex Maclean know their stuff. Much of what they’ve done in the last 10 years is in this very inspirational book.
A look inside of the book brings us on an instantly gratifying journey of discovering the core structure of vector graphics.
Fred Deakin said that when they first discussed the possibility of publishing the book, they were keen on the fact that it had to have something of worth in the narrative. It’s not only a choc full for the eyes but feeds the creative hunger too. Sort of like a sneak peek into the gray matter of creative geniuses!
The most noticeable thing is that despite it being an ‘autobiography’, the intention of the book is far from narcissistic. It’s more of literature on experimental methods, playful application of design concepts, out-of-the-box use of the said concepts and more.
The team of creatives behind Airside apparently loves simple white or plain-colored backdrops and loves working with shading and shapes… that is very simplistic yet unique design concept for vector graphics. They lure, not scream!
They also have many useful interviews done with staff members and their clients. It’s great to be a witness of the artistic way they’ve come up with these vector graphics. Totally awe-inspiring…
